Seniors owed some type of tax relief

I read Jack McAllister's letter to the editor dated June 22, and I totally agree with his statements regarding the increase in real estate taxes with the majority of the increase going to Huntley School District 158. I am also a resident of Sun City and my increase was equally significant.

I have written twice to Mr. Altmayer, CFO Treasurer of District 158 on this issue. His replies were evasive, although I do understand that taxes are paid in arrears and it does make a difference. However, presently my bills have increased and have to be paid now. Additionally, seniors are not getting a cost of living increase in our Social Security. I have voiced my concerns about the retired seniors' tax burden to Senators Kirk and Durbin but have not heard from either.

I also brought to the attention of the senators and Mr. Altmayer the fact that six states have senior citizens pay nothing or pay a reduced rate on the school's portion of their real estate statements. They are: Alaska, Wyoming, Georgia, Mississippi, Delaware and South Carolina. I believe the state of Illinois should consider the same policy, or they may force a good percentage of seniors to leave the state.
