McAninch Arts Center to celebrate 30th-anniversary season

Glen Ellyn's McAninch Arts Center presents its exciting 30th-anniversary season beginning this September.

"Diamonds and pearls are traditional gifts for a 30th anniversary," said Diana Martinez, director of the MAC. "We've used that as the inspiration to create a dazzling gem of a season with a variety of world-class artists."

The MAC's 2016-2017 Performance Series includes the mesmerizing MOMIX dance company (Sept. 10); rock singer-storyteller John Hiatt (Oct. 2); Stephen Schwartz and Friends, featuring the Tony Award-winning composer performing with some of his favorite Broadway singers (Oct. 7); a lecture by PBS's Rick Steves on "Travel as a Political Act" (Oct. 22); a concert by Grammy Award-winning American singer and keyboardist Bruce Hornsby (Oct. 28); The Havana Cuba All-Stars, showcasing some of Cuba's greatest and most prominent musicians (Nov. 6); Wynonna Judd & the Big Noise Christmas (Dec. 2); "Seven Things I've Learned: An Evening with Ira Glass" featuring the host of NPR's "This American Life" (Feb. 25); and much more.

The MAC's resident symphony orchestra, New Philharmonic, under the direction of Maestro Kirk Muspratt, marks its 40th anniversary with a five-concert season, featuring a concert of Gershwin works and Gilbert and Sullivan's comedic operetta, "The Mikado."

Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, under the artistic direction of Connie Canaday Howard, returns to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its founding with a new three-play season opening with Marc Camoletti's hysterical comedy, "Don't Dress for Dinner" (Sept. 9 to Oct. 9).

Shows for the MAC's 30th anniversary season currently are on sale by subscription. Single tickets go on sale 11 a.m. Aug. 6 at the MAC box office.

This summer, the MAC is offering its Lakeside Pavilion Free Summer Series. Acts include the Chicago-based '60s hit rock group, The Buckinghams (July 29); the tight harmonies of The Doo Wop Project (Aug. 5); a summer pops concert by the MAC's own New Philharmonic (Aug. 12) and Brass Transit, performing the music of the jazz-rock group Chicago (Aug. 26). Programming also includes the WDCB 90.9 FM LIVE Jazz Concert Series (Aug. 4, 11, 25).

All events take place rain or shine. Folks are encouraged to arrive early and bring a blanket and picnic. No alcohol is permitted to be brought in, but concessions and cocktails are available for sale on site.

Also, MAC's Cleve Carney Art Gallery will present an exciting exhibition. "Long View/Long Game," curated by Brandon Alvendia from the College of DuPage Permanent Art Collection, with works of artists who have shown in the MAC over the past three decades as in honor of the MAC's upcoming 30th Anniversary (Aug. 22 to Oct. 1).
