Serious injury avoided when truck goes through tennis court

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a high school gym class escaped serious injury when a truck barreled across tennis courts at a northwestern Indiana high school.

They say two students complaining of pain went to the school nurse's office as a precaution.

Lafayette Police Officer Mark Roberts says a Ford Ranger pickup came through a metal fence Monday morning and drove through a tennis net at Jefferson High School before crashing into another fence and bleachers.

Gym teacher Ron Whiteman was on the courts with his summer gym class when the incident occurred. He says the truck went airborne.

Roberts says the driver was taken to a hospital. The driver's name and what may have prompted the truck to enter the courts were not immediately released.
