Fish kill temporarily closes Evansville zoo to the public

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Evansville's Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden has reopened to the public following a fish kill in a lake.

The zoo opened four hours late Monday following the overnight fish kill.

Zoo spokeswoman Kelley Weis says it appeared hundreds of fish of multiple, unspecified species died.

Weis said an investigation by the zoo's staff veterinarian, Dr. Carrie Ullmer, didn't find a cause for the fish kill but an initial fish necropsy didn't reveal anything unusual.

Weis tells the Evansville Courier & Press (http://bit.ly/294M2eo ) the fish kill could have been caused by low concentrations of dissolved oxygen in the water because of increased temperatures and a recent lack of rain.
