Storms with strong winds, heavy rain hit northern Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Storms packings strong winds and heavy rain have rolled across parts of northern Indiana, downing trees and utility poles and leaving thousands of electricity customers without service.
Indiana Michigan Power Co. reported nearly 15,000 customers without service in its Indiana service territory late Monday afternoon, nearly all of them in South Bend and St. Joseph County.
In adjacent LaPorte County, police closed Indiana 39 from U.S. 20 to the Michigan state line after utility poles fell onto the highway. Fallen trees blocked other nearby county roads.
The National Weather Service said torrential rainfall was falling and might cause localized flooding. It said 1-2 inches of rainfall with 30-60 minutes was possible.
