Man charged in cop's death again asks to represent self

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A man accused of killing an Indianapolis police officer in 2014 has again asked to represent himself in court.

Major Davis appeared in court Friday to ask a judge if he could fire his public defenders. The 27-year-old is charged with murder in the shooting death of Perry Renn, who died in July 2014.

Prosecutors have said they'll seek the death penalty.

Marion Superior Court Judge Marc Rothenberg says the court has to determine if Davis is competent to stand trial and can represent himself. Rothenberg has appointed experts to evaluate Davis.

Davis claims his public defenders are "disrespectful" and "unprofessional." His attorneys presented the court with an affidavit from a doctor claiming Davis suffers from "paranoia and delusions," which Davis disputes.

A court hearing is scheduled for Aug. 2.
