Wrongful-conviction lawsuit dismissal decision coming soon

TUSCOLA, Ill. (AP) - A decision is expected next week on whether a lawsuit filed against three retired central Illinois police officers by a man wrongfully convicted of a 1993 murder will continue.

Douglas County Judge Richard Broch Jr. said Wednesday he will rule next week on a motion by the former Normal officers to dismiss Alan Beaman's lawsuit.

According to the Pantagraph in Bloomington (http://bit.ly/1Ys6oyy ), Beaman seeks $50,000 in damages from Normal and retired officers Tim Freesmeyer, Dave Warner and Frank Zayas.

Beaman served 13 years in prison in the death of Illinois State University student Jennifer Lockmiller before DNA evidence pointed to other suspects. The Illinois Supreme Court vacated his conviction in 2009.

Broch is hearing the case because of conflicts with former judges in McLean County, where Beaman was convicted.
