Thunderstorms lash parts of Indiana; 30,000 without power

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Thunderstorms packing torrential rains and winds gusting over 65 mph have lashed parts of Indiana and left more than 30,000 power customers without service.

The National Weather Service says the heavy wind gusts on the west side of Indianapolis on Wednesday afternoon. It says Indiana State Police reported spotting a funnel cloud over the town of Carthage, about 30 miles east of Indianapolis.

Indianapolis Power and Light Co. reported nearly 23,000 customers without service shortly before 6 p.m. EDT. Duke Energy reported 8,800 outages, largely in west central Indiana.

Heavy rainfall was causing street flooding in parts of Indianapolis. The weather service says a weather observer reported nearly 1.8 inches of rain falling in less than two hours and more than 4 inches of rain over the past two days.
