Suspect in stomping video freed as investigation continues
CHICAGO (AP) - A suspect seen in a Facebook video choking a Chicago police officer and being kicked in the head by another officer during an arrest has been released without charges being filed.
Police say the man, who they did not identify but whose lawyers said Wednesday was 23-year-old Shaquille O'Neal, was released Wednesday "pending further investigation." O'Neal was arrested after a chase and allegedly in possession of heroin.
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson placed the officer on desk duty after the video became public. The Independent Police Review Authority, which looks into Chicago police misconduct, is investigating the incident.
During a news conference, attorney Michael Oppenheimer said O'Neal saw the video for the first time Wednesday. He said not only disciplinary action, but a criminal investigation of the officer should take place.
