Chicago man convicted of 1992 Evanston death sentenced
SKOKIE, Ill. (AP) - A 46-year prison sentence has been handed Chicago man for the 1992 murder of an Evanston woman whose body was discovered by her then-4-year-old son.
DNA tests led to first-degree murder charges being filed in 2013 against Jimmie Dunlap in the death of 25-year-old Deondra Dawson. An autopsy determined Dawson had been stabbed at least 34 times.
The Cook County state's attorney's Cold Case Unit and Evanston police reopened an investigation of the case in 2010. Dunlap's name came up as a match when the department submitted evidence swabs to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab.
Judge Jeffrey Warnick had found the 45-year-old Dunlap guilty in a bench trial in April, and sentenced him Wednesday.
