Local leaders, Chicago LGBT community members speak out after Orlando tragedy

State and local leaders expressed their condolences, and in some cases called for stricter gun control measures, yesterday in wake of the terror attack at an Orlando, Florida, nightclub that's left at least 50 dead. Flags will be flown at half staff at state and federal government facilities in honor of the victims. Read more here. Daily Herald celebrates year's best in prep sports

The suburbs' top prep athletes and their families gathered yesterday to celebrate their successes on and off the field at the fourth annual Daily Herald Prep Sports Excellence Awards. More than 600 high school athletes representing 32 sports from 67 high schools were honored at the event, held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates. Each school nominated 10 of their top athletes, all of whom were invited to attend along with their families. Full story.

Women confront three-part challenge in Naperville triathlon

More than 1,500 women confronted a three-part challenge yesterday morning during the fourth annual Gildan Esprit de She Naperville Women's Triathlon, then celebrated their accomplishments together. It was swim, bike, run, then party for the athletes, who were treated to free photos, manicures, hair-braiding, nonalcoholic sangria and a healthy lifestyles market at Centennial Beach after finishing the race.
