Indiana warns elderly, children of poor weekend air quality

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - State officials have issued an ozone advisory for some of Indiana's urban areas due to poor air quality during what's forecast to be a sweltering weekend.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says levels of ozone, a powerful lung irritant that's the main ingredient in smog, will be high through at least Sunday.

Weekend temperatures are forecast to climb into the 90s statewide.

The agency says elderly residents, children and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce their physical exertion if they live in some urban areas.

The advisory covers central Indiana, the Indiana suburbs of Louisville, Kentucky, and southwestern Indiana both Friday and Saturday. Saturday's advisory also covers northern Indiana's Elkhart and St. Joseph counties.

Sunday's advisory will cover southwestern Indiana and the Louisville suburbs.
