Elgin man charged with sexually assaulting 2 young girls

A 75-year-old Elgin man was being held on $500,000 bail after his arrest this week on charges he sexually assaulted two girls younger than 13 a decade ago.

Robert R. Jahnke, of the 1200 block of Country Club Drive, was charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, a felony that carries a prison term of six to 30 years without the possibility of probation and a lifetime registration as a sex offender.

Jahnke is accused of assaulting the girls in May 2006. The girls were younger than 13 and fall into an extended statute of limitations, thus allowing authorities to prosecute the case, records show.

Elgin police Cmdr. Colin Fleury referred questions to the Kane County Child Advocacy Center, which investigates crimes against children.

Officials at the advocacy center declined to comment beyond what was in court documents.

Jahnke must post $50,000 to be released from Kane County jail while the case is pending. He's due in court June 23.
