Fort Wayne toddler dies after father backs car down driveway

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Police in Fort Wayne say a 1-year-old girl died after her father accidentally struck her while backing out of the driveway.

Fort Wayne police spokesman Michael Joyner says the girl's father was working on the vehicle Wednesday afternoon when he got into the sedan and started backing it out of the driveway. Joyner says that's when the vehicle struck the girl. Authorities say he didn't' see the toddler.

Emergency responders took the girl in critical condition to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Joyner called it a "tragic accident." He says the family member will undergo standard drug and alcohol screenings.

The identity of the girl and father weren't immediately released. Allen County authorities are investigating.
