Former Leverkusen coach Sascha Lewandowski dead at 44

BOCHUM, Germany (AP) - Former Bayer Leverkusen coach Sascha Lewandowski, who stepped down as coach of second-division Union Berlin in March suffering from burnout, has died. He was 44.

Both clubs confirmed his death.

Police in Bochum said on Thursday that Lewandowski was found dead at his apartment in the western German city on Wednesday, news agency dpa reported. There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

Lewandowski coached Leverkusen along with Sami Hyppia in 2012-13. They finished third in the Bundesliga, and Lewandowski stepped down to run the up-and-comers. He joined Union Berlin in September but stepped down in March on the advice of doctors after he was diagnosed with burnout syndrome.

Leverkusen sport director Rudi Voeller said it was "hard to imagine that Sascha is dead."

Union chairman Dirk Zingler said in a statement that the club was "deeply dismayed and incredibly sad."
