Indiana audit asks 2 retired educators repay district $850K

MUNSER, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana State Board of Accounts has requested two retired northwestern Indiana educators repay their former school district more than $850,000.

The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/1XaQ3Px ) the audit of the School Town of Munster found retired Superintendent William Pfister should reimburse the district nearly $360,000 and retired Assistant Superintendent Richard Sopko should reimburse the district $311,000 for overpayments to their annuities.

The audit also requests the two men repay the district for overpaid bonuses, salaries and other compensation.

Pfister and Sopko both retired on June 30, 2012.

Both men, in responses by their attorney to the audits, denied they were overcompensated. A message seeking comment was left for the attorney.

The State Board of Accounts sent the audit to the Indiana Attorney General's Office and the Lake County prosecutor.
