Festival honoring Cole Porter festival starts Thursday

PERU, Ind. (AP) - The central Indiana city of Peru is getting ready to celebrate its hometown native, Broadway composer Cole Porter.

The annual Cole Porter Festival starts Thursday. That would have been Porter's 125th birthday. He was born in Peru in 1891 and did some of his first composing there.

Festival public relations volunteer Vickie Draper tells the Kokomo Tribune (http://bit.ly/1t8Oo08 ) organizers are "trying to bring a little of New York to Indiana."

Part of the festival will be at the Cole Porter Inn, which was Porter's childhood home and now has three suites themed from his songs.

The festival will have a Porter bus tour including his birthplace and burial site. It runs through Sunday.

Porter is famous for writing classic songs from Broadway shows including "Anything Goes" and "Kiss Me Kate."
