Look beyond Rt. 53 for gridlock solutions
I am thankful that Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor has heard the concern of Lake County citizens and has withdrawn his support for the Route 53 extension.
His action follows Blue Ribbon Advisory Council (BRAC) members state Sen. Terry Link and Rep. Rita Mayfield who previously withdrew their support as well as all environmental groups in the BRAC.
The corridor communities of Long Grove and Hawthorne Woods are also opposed to the extension as well as many citizens of Lake County.
With the loss of consensus in Lake County, it is time for the Illinois Tollway to stop the $40 million to $50 million-dollar Environmental Impact Study for an unaffordable project that Lake County does not want.
Lake County now needs to work toward improving mass transit and finding effective transportation solutions to relieve congestion that do not include Route 53.
