Man sentenced in shooting death of his 3-year-old son
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indianapolis man has been sentenced in the accidental shooting death of his 3-year-old son.
The Marion County prosecutor's office tells The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1TP1BlB ) that Nicholas Gulling was sentenced to six years in community corrections and 14 years on probation. He pleaded guilty to felony neglect of a dependent.
Police charged both Gulling and the child's mother, Sandra Tomich, in the December 2013 shooting. The boy took a loaded handgun off a kitchen counter and shot himself in the head. The gun had no safety or lock and authorities found eight other firearms in the home without safety provisions.
The child died at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.
Gulling took responsibility for the incident with his plea and Tomich's case was dismissed.
