Baseball: Batavia, Jacobs, Huntley snap up regional crowns
Retiring Batavia baseball coach Matt Holm will have to wait a few more days to hang up his uniform for the last time.
Holm's Bulldogs scored 8 runs in the third inning Saturday and went on to defeat Upstate Eight Valley champion Glenbard East 13-8 in the championship game of the Class 4A Glenbard West regional.
Batavia (24-10) will take on UEC River rival St. Charles East at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals of the Schaumburg sectional.
The Bulldogs, who were aided by 6 Glenbard East errors, got home runs from Tyler Kledzik (2 hits, 3 RBI) and Kyle Niemiec in the win while Jimmy Roach (2 hits, RBI) and Ben Lynam (2 hits, 4 RBI) each had doubles. Andrew Costigan also drove in 2 runs.
Starter Luke Golson got the win on the mound.
Jacobs 3, Harlem 0: Brenden Heiss tossed a 3-hitter with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks as the Golden Eagles (22-13) won the Class 4A Belvidere North regional, their fourth straight regional title. Jacobs will play Grant on Thursday at the Huntley sectional. Mike Addante led the Eagles' offense Saturday, going 4-for-4 with a double, triple and 4 RBI. Stevie Krueger added 2 hits with a double, Tim Randl had a double and 2 RBI, Nate Meland added 2 hits with a triple and Kraeton Moll had a double.
Huntley 8, Hononegah 4: Huntley snapped a 3-3 tie with 4 runs in the top of the sixth inning and went on to win the Class 4A Rockford Guilford regional in a game that was called after six innings due to persistent lightning. The Red Raiders (23-14) will take on Prairie Ridge Wednesday at the Huntley sectional. Leading the Huntley offense Saturday were Jeff Heinrich (3 hits, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Noah Konie (2 RBI), Joe Rizzo (3 hits, RBI), Brad Model (2 hits, 2B. 2 RBI) and Alec Coss (3 hits, 2B).
