Samardzija makes big league upgrades at hometown field

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - San Francisco Giants pitcher Jeff Samardzija and his family are giving a ball park in his hometown a big league upgrade.

Samardzija's brother, Sam Samardzija, told The Times (http://bit.ly/1UawoZu ) on Thursday that a decades-old baseball park at Tower Park in Valparaiso will be renamed Samardzija Field. It will have the city's first artificial turf youth baseball field and a new fence, scoreboard and spectator plaza.

Sam Samardzija said the brothers grew up playing at Tower Park and wanted to upgrade the field to match youth fields they saw in other parts of the country.

Jeff Samardzija was with the Giants but in a written statement said announcing the upgrades made it a "very special day."

Samardzija moved to the Giants this season after pitching for the Cubs and White Sox.
