Metra adding afternoon trains today

Metra is adding trains today for riders eager to get home early for the Memorial Day long weekend.

Changes to the schedule include extra trips early in the afternoon and a few cancellations of rush-hour trains. Riders are advised to check the agency's website for the modified schedules under the "Good to Know" tab.

"It's what we do before major holiday weekends, since a lot of people leave work early to get an early start on the holiday weekend," Communications Director Michael Gillis said.

The agency also is letting up to three children aged 11 and under ride free with an adult Saturday through Labor Day.

Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule on Memorial Day.
