Ron Magers signs off after decades in Chicago television
After a half-century in journalism, including more than three decades in Chicago, Ron Magers said goodbye after ABC 7's 10 p.m. newscast on Wednesday night.
Magers, 71, is retiring as one of the most trusted and beloved newsmen in the city where he spent 34 years bringing stories to viewers on a nightly basis.
All week, co-workers at ABC 7 have been surprising Magers with special guests like his former co-anchor Carol Marin, a message from his brother Paul - who is also a television anchor in California - and a visit from the Chicago mounted police, which delighted Magers, a fan of horses.
Journalists and fans have been sharing their memories of working with Magers over the years and using the hashtag #ThanksRon on social media.
"He's a natural. He is a rebel who stands on principle," said retired ABC 7 reporter Paul Meincke. "He knows that words matter, that you have to dig hard for the truth, and that viewers should be treated with the intelligence and respect they deserve. We are better for all he's done."
His final 10 p.m. newscast ended with Magers alone at the anchor desk.
"I've had the great good fortune of doing something I loved for the last 51 years," Magers said. "Even when I hated it, I loved it."
Before being greeted with applause and hugs from the station's cast and crew, Magers signed off with a quote often attributed to Dr. Seuss: "Don't cry that it's over, smile that it happened."
