Correction: Madison-Historic Records story

MADISON, Ind. (AP) - In a story May 22 about Jefferson County's commissioners approving $35,000 for a preservation group, The Associated Press erroneously reported that the money would be used to preserve historic county records. The funding was approved after an advisory board recommended that the money might be best used to preserve those records, but it could be used for other purposes.

A corrected version of the story is below:

A southern Indiana county has approved $35,000 in funding for a preservation group after a local advisory board suggested the best use of that money might be to preserve a cache of historic records.

The Jefferson County Commissioners approved the funding last week for Historic Madison Inc.'s $2.5 million capital campaign for the renovation of the historic Shrewsbury-Windle House.

The $35,000 was approved after an advisory board for the county's casino revenue historic preservation fund recommended to the commissioners that the money might be best used to preserve historic county records, some predating the Civil War.

The Madison Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1U5v6yF ) advisory board member Warren Auxier says it would take a "tremendous amount of work" to preserve and protect those documents stored in the courthouse basement and its annex in Madison.
