Softball: Zdroik no-hitter leads St. Edward to 2A regional crown
Senior Lindsay Zdroik threw a six-inning no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and 1 walk Saturday as the St. Edward softball team defeated DePaul College Prep 10-0 to win the Class 2A DePaul Prep regional championship.
The Green Wave (22-8) will take on Westmont at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Benedictine University in the Lisle sectional semifinals.
In Saturday's win, Emily Stapay had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBI for St. Edward while Devyn Ernst (2 hits, 2 RBI), Rachel Lesh (2B, RBI), Zdroik (2 RBI) and Allison Stratman (RBI) also contributed to the offense.
Burlington Central 8, Belleville East 5: Gretchen Schrubbe had 3 hits and her 3-run double in the top of the eighth inning won the game for the Rockets (23-8) at the Stone City Jamboree. Kristina Ahlers went 4-for-5 while Emily Kisch and Kelly Wiater added 3 hits each for BC. Ashley Ratliff picked up the win in the circle going 5 innings.
St. Charles North splits: The North Stars lost to Sandburg 9-7 then came back to beat Normal West 3-1 at the Stone City Jamboree. Against Sandburg, Amanda James had 2 RBI for SCN while Alyssa Eby added 3 hits, Samantha Hausl had 2 hits, Maddie Webb 2 hits and an RBI, Allison Hausl 2 hits and 2 RBI and Jillian Waslawski 3 hits with a double and 2 RBI. Natalie Walters suffered the pitching loss in relief. In the win over Normal West, James had a triple and an RBI for the North Stars (22-5) and Eby added 2 hits. Webb picked up the complete-game win allowing 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Geneva splits: Katelyn Keller and Alyssa Kramer each had doubles while Katherine Geary, Emily Plocinski and Sarah Brauer each drove in 2 runs as Geneva defeated Prairie Ridge 9-2 to salvage a split of a nonconference doubleheader. Rachel Fanella added 2 hits for the Vikings and Plocinski was the winning pitcher allowing 5 hits in 5 innings. In Game 1, Keller had a double and an RBI and Molly Wrenn drove in a run but the Vikings (23-10) fell 5-4.
Huntley wins 2: Playing at the Joliet West quad, the Red Raiders (24-8) defeated Oswego 6-2 and Joliet West 12-4. Against Oswego, Jessica Shields (2 hits, 3B, 2 RBI), Rylie Porretto (3 hits, 2B, RBI), winning pitcher Tiffany Giese (3 hits, 3B), Hayley O'Mara (2 hits, 2B, RBI), Sofia Tenuta (2 doubles), Megan Baczewski (HR) and Caitlin Brown (2 hits) led the Red Raiders' offense. In the win over Joliet West, Shields had 2 hits with a double and an RBI as well as 3 stolen bases to bring her season total to 61. Also contributing were Giese (3 hits, RBI), who also earned her 23rd pitching win of the season, Porretto (3 hits, 2 HRs, 6 RBI), Tenuta (2 hits), Taylor Pacana (2 hits, 2B), Autumn Kasl (2 hits, HR) and Baczewski (3 hits).
Batavia sweeps: The Bulldogs (20-12) had an easy time with DeLaSalle, sweeping their nonconference doubleheader by identical 11-1 scores. In Game 1, Jena Bendoraitis (2 RBI) and Rachael Lovestrand (2 hits) each had triples for Batavia while Jaelen Lisberg had 2 hits and 3 RBI, winning pitcher Kaylan Waldron added 2 hits and Jessicsa Kleist had 2 hits and an RBI. In the second game, Lovestrand (2 RBI), Ashley McNamara (2 RBI), Bendoraitis (2 RBI) and Tori Isom (3 hits, 2B, 2 RBI) led the offense and Lisberg was the winning pitcher, allowing 1 hit with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5 innings.
Cary-Grove 7, Wheaton Academy 2: At the Bandits Jamboree in Rosemont, Brianne Prank had 3 hits with a double, triple and 2 RBI to lead the Trojans (11-18) to the win. Victoria Beatty also added 3 hits for C-G and Rachel Stanley was the winning pitcher, going 4 innings and allowing just 2 hits.
Nazareth 3, West Aurora 0: Grace Hunger, Cara Jimenez and Jessica Vargas had the only hits for the Blackhawks (26-3) in this nonconference loss. Hannah Beatus was the losing pitcher despite allowing just 1 earned run and striking out 8 batters in 4 innings.
Kaneland 4, Rosary 1: Morgan Weber (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Meg Cohrs (2 hits, 2B, 2 RBI) each hit home runs for Kaneland (20-14) in this nonconference win. Lexi Abruzzo added 2 hits with a triple for the Knights. Courtney Davis allowed 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks to earn the win. Ries McCue had 2 hits and an RBI for Rosary (11-13). Emma Mollenhouse was the losing pitcher.
