Baseball: Cornelius, Snep help Lake Zurich past Fremd
Sophomore Ben Cornelius pitched 6 shutout innings, freshman Tyler Snep hit a solo homer, and Lake Zurich's baseball team blanked Fremd 2-0 in a nonconference game on Friday.
Snep and Kevin Johlie had the Bears' only hits. Cornelius allowed 4 hits, struck out six and walked three. Trevor Niedzwiecki struck out one in his 1 inning to earn the save.
Lakes 3, Grayslake North 1: Tim Ohlwein pitched 5 scoreless innings of 3-hit ball, striking out three and walking three in improving to 6-2 with the nonconference win.
Ben Milewski earned his second save, allowing 1 run and 2 hits in 2 innings with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Lakes (15-14) was paced offensively by Matt Milewski (1-for-2, double, 2 RBI) and Ryan Selig (1-for-2, run, stolen base).
Grayslake North's Danny Yates was 2-for-2 with a triple. Brendan Taskovic (1-for-3) had the Knights' lone RBI.
Grayslake Central 8, Burlington Central 3: The visiting Rams rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the nonconference game.
Sam Ruhlmann had a double and 3 RBI for Grayslake Central, which scored 5 runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Kyle Allen was 2-for-5, and Benton Troehler added a double for the Rams.
Bryce Gniadek pitched 5 scoreless innings of 2-hit ball in relief to earn the win.
Metea Valley 1, Warren 0: Luke Schmitt and Jordan Litke singled for the Blue Devils' only hits in the nonconference game.
Warren reliever Nate Styles pitched 4 scoreless innings of 1-hit ball, striking out four and not walking a batter.
