Goal met to keep 14-foot-tall sculpture in downtown Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - A 14-foot-tall, flaming red sculpture will remain in downtown Columbus after local arts supporters met a $40,000 fundraising goal.

That's what organizers say was needed to buy the "Flamenco" sculpture that's been outside the community gathering space called The Commons since 2014.

Chicago artist Ruth Aizuss Migdal tells The (Columbus) Republic (http://bit.ly/1TodNfa ) that she's overwhelmed by the public backing for making her abstract sculpture part of the city's permanent art collection.

Migdal says she was treated like a queen during a fundraising event on Friday that attracted 120 people. She says she's glad the sculpture will have a home in Columbus, which is renowned for its architecture and has several buildings designated National Historic Landmarks.
