U of Illinois aims to keep psychiatrists with residency

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign is creating a residency program in general psychiatry to tempt some of its graduating doctors to stay in eastern and central Illinois.

Dr. Michele Mariscalco is dean of the medical college. She says access to psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in the region is limited, especially outside metropolitan areas like Urbana-Champaign and Danville.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1TdiLfN ) that recruitment will begin in the fall and the first four residents are expected to begin work in July 2017.

The university is teaming up with three partner hospitals for the program: Carle Foundation Hospital, Presence Covenant Medical Center and the VA Illiana Healthcare System.

The program will be accredited to four residents per class and build to 16 over four years.
