Prosecutors: Palatine man drove drunk, caused crash

A Palatine man who prosecutors say has a total of six aliases and has failed to appear in court following three previous DUI arrests was ordered held on $100,000 bail Thursday on charges he drove drunk.

Juan Martinez, of the 1100 block of Baldwin Road, was driving west on Dundee Road about 7 p.m. Tuesday when he veered into the eastbound lane and collided with another vehicle, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin.

No one was injured in the crash. Afterward, a witness observed Martinez run from his vehicle, Shin said. Police apprehended him about 10 minutes later in the 2100 block of North Rand Road, Shin said.

Police said Martinez, 38, had a bloody nose, bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech and the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage about him, Shin said.

Martinez has two bond forfeiture warrants from Cook and Kane counties and a 2004 conviction for driving without a valid license.

Judge Joseph Cataldo prohibited Martinez from driving and ordered him to submit to a curfew. Cataldo also ordered Martinez abstain from drugs or alcohol.

Martinez next appears in court on June 3.
