Judge decides to delay trial in IU student's death

NASHVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The trial of a Bloomington man accused of killing an Indiana University student has been pushed back.

Brown Circuit Judge Judith Stewart decided Wednesday to postpone the scheduled June 1 start of the trial of 50-year-old Daniel Messel. He's charged with murder in the April 2015 beating death of 22-year-old student Hannah Wilson of Fishers. Her body was found about 10 miles northwest of IU's Bloomington campus.

Defense attorney Dorie Maryan asked for the delay. Maryan says she needs more time to take depositions and that new evidence from prosecutors requires more time for review and analysis.

Brown County Prosecutor Ted Adams opposed a delay. He says Wilson's family needs closure.

Stewart is due to discuss a possible new trial date with the attorneys on Thursday.
