Changes keep coming at long standing Holiday Drive-In
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A lot has changed since the Holiday Drive-In premiered its first outdoor movie back in 1955.
Film projectors were recently replaced with digital. The single screen business has expanded to five screens with a sixth to be added sometime this summer.
And now the old, tiny ticket booths with glazed brick and fancy wrought iron decor are being replaced with two new, spacious booths replete with air-conditioning and vinyl siding.
"We're gonna dress it up and make it look a little more presentable," Tim Jones of Owensboro, Kentucky, said. Jones is the long-time maintenance man at the outdoor theater.
Jones and his son, Chris Jones, who owns 5 Star Construction and Maintenance, are doing the work on the booths and the surrounding area.
"We widened the driveway to 60-feet-wide and are putting black top around them," Tim Jones said. "We're gonna make them look a lot neater and cleaner."
Chris Jones secured the wood to the studs with his pneumatic staple gun after his dad cut them to fit with a circular saw. They worked quickly in hopes of having the first booth finished before Friday night's customers started lining up in cars, vans and pickup trucks.
Spring weather can be a little unpredictable, but it doesn't seem to bother customers looking for a well-priced double-feature.
"It gets a little chilly at night," Tim Jones said, "but people seem to like it that way."
