Democratic leaders disavow congressional primary winner

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Democratic Party leaders in northeastern Indiana say they won't support the perennial candidate who won its 3rd Congressional District nomination.

Tommy Schrader of Fort Wayne won Tuesday's Democratic primary with about 38 percent of the vote over two other little-known candidates. Schrader has unsuccessfully run several times for Congress and city offices.

Republican state Sen. Jim Banks of Columbia City won his party's nomination in the heavily GOP district.

Schrader tells WANE-TV (http://bit.ly/1SRmKuX ) he's living at a motel while unemployed, describing himself an honest beer drinker.

Allen County Democratic chairman Jack Morris says Schrader isn't a viable candidate but has a last name that's well-known in the area. Morris says he should've done more to support Huntington business owner Todd Nightenhelser, whom party leaders had endorsed.
