Fire causes $5,000 in damage to vacant Elgin home

Elgin firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant home on Wednesday afternoon.

A passer-by noticed smoke from the fire at 600 Cooper Ave. at 3:25 p.m., according to a news release.

The fire was under control within nine minutes, officials said.

The home had recently been purchased for $60,000, and the news release stated that the fire caused $5,000 in damage.

Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire. No firefighters or civilians were injured.
