$22.7 million awarded in fatal I-294 crash case

What is believed to be the largest wrongful-death verdict in Cook County in the past decade has been awarded to the family of a 31-year-old Union man who was killed in a 2012 crash on I-294 just north of Roosevelt Road. The $22.7 million judgment comes after a wrongful-death suit was filed by the wife of Aaron Swenson. He was killed when a speeding truck driver, who had drugs in his system, slammed into the back of Swenson's car. Full story.

Naperville police apprehend 'despondent' man with gun

Naperville police apprehended a man described as "despondent" walking around with a gun Tuesday night, authorities said. Police responded to the 1500 Block of Fairway Drive at 7:38 p.m. and soon located the man and the gun. He isn't facing any criminal charges at this time. Full story.

District 50 fires employee accused of shoving child to ground

Woodland Elementary District 50 has fired an employee accused of shoving a child to the ground. The Gurnee-based District 50 school board Tuesday night voted 7-0 in favor of Peggy Bora's dismissal, though they did not comment about Bora before or after the vote. Authorities said Bora, a lunchtime worker, pushed a second-grader to the ground in two separate instances at the school April 4. Full story.

Insanity defense coming for Naperville mom in fatal stabbings

The attorney representing a Naperville woman accused of stabbing her young son and a young girl she was baby-sitting for in 2012 said he is preparing an insanity defense for the woman. Assistant Public Defender Michael Mara said Tuesday he filed a "Notice of Affirmative Defense - Insanity" for Elzbieta Plackowska, who is accused of repeatedly stabbing Olivia Dworakowski, 5, and her own son, Justin Plackowski, 7, on Oct. 30, 2012. Banquet hall proposed for former Cubby Bear North

A professional event planner wants to open a banquet hall at the former Cubby Bear North sports bar in Lincolnshire. The proposed business would be called Loft 21 and would operate in the 31,000-square-foot building at 21661 N. Milwaukee Ave. The two-story, building has stood unused since the Cubby Bear closed in January 2014. Full story.
