INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz started his first Indiana campaign swing with a stop at a popular downtown Indianapolis deli.
A couple hundred people crowded into Shapiro's Delicatessen for Cruz's visit Thursday afternoon, with many supporters taking photos with the Texas senator before he ordered a pastrami sandwich.
Cruz met privately later Thursday with Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. He also was due to speak at a state GOP fundraising dinner in Indianapolis, where tickets cost $150 each and up.
Cruz's trip and Donald Trump's Indianapolis campaign rally on Wednesday come as they try to build support for their Republican presidential nomination bids ahead of Indiana's May 3 primary. John Kasich has scheduled a town hall meeting Tuesday in suburban Indianapolis.
