ComEd volunteers spruce up Elgin soup kitchen
ComEd volunteers helped spruce up an Elgin soup kitchen Tuesday as part of National Volunteer Week.
The volunteers painted, cleaned and organized the kitchen, pantry and serving area at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, which serves hot meals to those in need on Thursdays.
The ComEd team included Joe Svachula, vice president of smart grid and technology, who said the endeavor is great for team building.
"We live and work in our communities, so it's important to give back," he said.
More than 1,000 ComEd volunteers are expected to participate in more than 50 community service projects this week. Last year, ComEd employees logged 18,600 hours of volunteer time in communities throughout the company's service territory.
