Batavia water chief to retire, but work part-time on city hall renovation

Batavia's water and sewer department superintendent is retiring at the end of July, and in August will start a temporary job for the city, helping with renovations at the Batavia Government Center and breaking in a new superintendent.

The city council approved a contract Monday with John Dillon in an 11-1 vote with two aldermen absent.

Dillon will be paid $56.48 an hour for up to 599 hours a year, which would add up to $33,831. The contract will end July 27, 2018. The rate can be increased, decreased or frozen the same as wages given to nonunion city workers.

He can participate in the city's regular health, dental and vision insurance plan for single coverage if he pays the employee share of the premium.

The public works director will approve his schedule.

Besides being water and sewer superintendent, Dillon in recent years has run the city's building and grounds operation. He is on a committee of building inspectors and architects that in 2015 assessed the building and suggested $1.5 million in work for the Government Center. The city bought the 115-year-old former factory in 1973, moved city offices into it in the early 1980s, and spent $3 million in renovations in 1994 for the police department and city council room.

The report suggested upgrading the elevator, which is taking place; replacing most of the 117 windows; adding a separate cooling system for the computer server room; upgrading security systems; replacing rotting timbers; bringing the electrical wiring up to code; and more.

Dillon, who has worked for the city since 1979, currently makes $121,991 a year.
