U of Illinois art museum plans summer closure for renovation

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois' Krannert Art Museum will be renovated this summer and into the fall.

The university said Monday the museum on the Urbana-Champaign campus will close May 15 and begin reopening some galleries when class resume in August. The project is expected to be finished and the entire museum open again in November.

The work will update exhibition spaces that in many cases have not changed since the museum opened in 1961. The plans include LED lighting upgrades, new electrical wiring and new walls, floors and ceilings.

The renovation is the second stage of a multiyear project across the museum.

The university did not provide a dollar value on the cost of the work, but said it matched cash donations of $5,000 or more.
