Pekin considering ordinance to allow murals on buildings

PEKIN, Ill. (AP) - Pekin could soon be getting a lot more colorful.

The Pekin Daily Times (http://bit.ly/1VwY3cF ) reports that the city council for the central Illinois community will consider an ordinance next week that would allow mounted vinyl murals featuring the work of local artists to be placed on buildings around town.

Supporters say the ordinance would help artists because they'd be paid by the building owners and because the murals would give them a lot of exposure. The murals won't be painted directly on the buildings but hung from brackets, the murals can be easily switched - meaning more artists will get to earn money and have their work seen.

The ordinance is patterned after one in Peoria that has resulted in murals popping up on buildings throughout the city.
