Woman shot by police in Marion hostage standoff sues city

MARION, Ill. (AP) - A woman who was shot by police after being taken hostage is suing the city of Marion and members of its police department and the Williamson County Sheriff's Office.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (bit.ly/1Nd9nbd ) reports that Samantha Holmes filed the lawsuit Monday over an April 28, 2015, incident at her apartment.

Holmes was shot in her right hip and buttocks during a four-hour standoff in which 27-year-old Joshua Green was shot and killed by police. Her attorney says Holmes's injuries required surgery and use of a colostomy bag.

The lawsuit accuses city and county officers of disregarding Holmes' safety in violation of police procedures.

Attorney Joe Bleyer, who represents the city, said Friday that the police responded properly when Green pulled a gun. He called Holmes' injury an "unfortunate accident."
