Baseball: Svanson serves up 1-hit winner for Lake Zurich
Matt Svanson fired a complete-game one-hit shutout, as Lake Zurich's baseball team beat Zion-Benton 6-0 in North Suburban Lake Division action Wednesday.
Svanson struck out eight and did not walk a batter. He lost his no-hit bid in the seventh inning on a single by the Zee-Bees' Kyle Koesser.
Lake Zurich had 9 hits, including a double by Austin Wells. The Bears scored 3 runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Dylan Niedzwiecki (3-for-3, 2 runs), a sacrifice fly by Trevor Niedzwiecki and Wells' RBI double.
Wells and Ben Cornelius both finished 2-for-3, as Lake Zurich (5-6, 2-0) beat the Zee-Bees for the second day in a row.
Warren 4, Libertyville 0: Sam LaMotte turned in the Blue Devils' second pitching gem in as many days, firing a complete-game two-hitter with 5 strikeouts in the North Suburban Lake game.
Michael Rosenberg's two-run homer in the first inning gave LaMotte all the offense he needed. Luke Schmitt and Cal Poremba (RBI) were both 2-for-3 for Warren (8-4, 2-2).
Ryan Greenberg and Brian Murphy singled for Libertyville (8-3, 2-2), which got shut out by Warren's Ryan Davila on Tuesday.
Stevenson 11, Lake Forest 1: The Patriots beat the Scouts for the second day in a row, as Charlie Ling went 3-for-4 with a double and 3 runs scored.
Robbie McGaha was 2-for-4 with a two-run double for Stevenson (8-3-1, 4-0). Dylan Molek also doubled for the Patriots, while Michael Marchese pitched 5 innings of three-hit ball for the win.
Wauconda 6, Lakes 1: The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the fifth and four times in the sixth to win the North Suburban Prairie contest.
Jake Grobelny earned the complete-game win, striking out nine and walking none. He scattered 6 hits, and the one run he allowed was unearned.
Collin Shrader was 1-for-1 with a double and 2 walks for Wauconda (7-2, 2-0). Brian McFarlin went 1-for-2 with 2 walks and an RBI, and Trevor Sefcik was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Lakes (3-6, 1-2) got a double from Matt Grubb. Ben Milewski suffered the loss, despite allowing just 2 runs (1 earned) in 5 innings. He struck out seven and walked five.
Grant 7, Vernon Hills 7 (susp.): The visiting Bulldogs scored the tying run in the top of the seventh, and after the Cougars failed to score in the bottom of the inning, the North Suburban Prairie game was suspended due to darkness.
Vernon Hills led 5-1 after four, then took a 7-6 lead in the sixth after Grant scored four in the top of the inning.
The game will be resumed on a date yet to be determined.
Mundelein 10, Round Lake 0: Zack Zentz earned the win in the nonconference game.
Reese Dolan and Ryan Fairweather doubled for Mundelein.
Jake Emer, Marc Huston, and Kyle Whitely teamed up to stifle North Chicago, striking out eight while walking four.
Huston looked sharp on the mound. Huston held North Chicago hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four.
Antioch 31, North Chicago 0: Marc Huston, Kyle Whitely and Jake Emer combined on a four-inning no-hitter in the North Suburban Prairie game.
Whitely (double), Dylan Rathbun and Thomas Boeh (4 RBI) each had 4 hits for Antioch (6-4, 2-1).
