Organizers hope Indiana event boosts civility in politics

GARY, Ind. (AP) - Organizers expect about 300 people to attend a northwestern Indiana program aimed at promoting civility in politics and the community.

The World Civility Day event set for Thursday evening in Gary includes presentations about the new Political Civility Scorecard by the National Civility Center and training for state legislators being offered by the National Institute for Civil Discourse.

Educators also will discuss a Civility in the Classroom program at LightHouse College Prep Academy in Gary.

Organizers say they're stressing the importance of civility as the presidential campaigns heat up going into Indiana's May 3 primary.

The program at the Majestic Star Casino is sponsored by the group Community Civility Counts, which was started last April by the Gary Chamber of Commerce and The Times Media Co. of Munster.
