Girls water polo: OT victories for Hersey, Prospect
Hersey's girls water polo team improved its chances in the Mid-Suburban East by picking up an 8-5 overtime win against Rolling Meadows on Wednesday.
Prospect remains the division leader, but Hersey and Meadows entered Wednesday's matchup tied for second place. The Huskies' win keep them 1 game behind the Knights, with a head-to-head matchup between the teams scheduled for April 25.
Stephanie Surkin and Madison Burkhalter both finished with 3 goals for Hersey (12-4, 5-2), which had a 3-1 scoring edge in the second session of OT.
Lizzie Hardt (3 goals) and Betsy Zanocco (2) led the scoring for Meadows (10-6, 4-3), with Zanocco also stopping 13 shots in goal.
Prospect 8, Wheeling 7 (2 OT): After both teams scored twice in the OT, Prospect's Gracie Dix came up with the decisive goal on a backhand, set by Ann Fulk.
Dix finished with a game-high 6 goals and Colleen Doyle had 2 for the Knights (9-6, 6-1), who got a 21-save effort from goalie Lauren Broz.
Argelia Diaz led Wheeling with 3 goals and Adrianna Passannante had 2.
"It was back and forth the whole game," said Prospect coach Natalie Tucker. "Wheeling looked great - we just edged them out."
Fremd 4, Palatine 2: Fourth-quarter goals from Paulina Pappas and Emily Kini were the difference as host Fremd protected its MSL West lead with a victory.
Pappas finished with 2 goals and Jenessa Islas-Parker also scored for the Vikings (13-3, 6-1).
Mathilde Mogensen and Kelsey Hank scored for Palatine, and Tess O'Brien (14 saves) and Meghan Woell (4 saves) split time in goal.
"We played a great game defensively - just got worn down with only two subs tonight," said Palatine coach Mitch Tucker. "Up and down season for us, but we are improving and I am encouraged as sectionals approach."
Barrington 8, Conant 4: Nicole Runtz, Isabella Rojas and Alyssa Schmidts each scored 3 goals and Ellie Connors made 4 saves to help the Fillies (11-2, 5-2) stay 1 game behind MSL West leader Fremd.
