Baseball: Cary-Grove rallies past Grayslake Central
Cary-Grove scored 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat visiting Grayslake Central, 6-2 in Fox Valley Conference baseball on Tuesday.
It was the second consecutive game in which Grayslake Central was tied heading into the sixth or seventh inning but could not get the win.
"We are a young team that's still learning how to finish games," Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. "I'm proud of how we battled back from a 2-0 deficit but Cary-Grove responded and that's what good teams do."
Ryan Mikes and freshman Coby Moe drove in runs with a pair of singles in the top of the sixth that tied the game at 2-2.
Benton Troehler added 2 hits for the Rams and pitcher Sam Ruhlmann rolled up 6 strikeouts over five innings in the loss.
"Sam was great as always," Whalen said. "He really competes on every pitch."
Grayslake Central is now 7-3 on the season.
Warren 1, Libertyville 0: Warren got the only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning off a hit by Eric Ripley.
Winning pitcher Ryan Davilla had 6 strikeouts and gave up just 1 hit and no walks over seven innings.
Tim Calamari got Libertyville's only hit.
Warren is now 7-4 on the season.
Lake Zurich 4, Zion-Benton 1 (8): Lake Zurich scored 3 runs in the top of the eighth inning to break up a tie game in extra innings.
Camden Boyle topped Lake Zurich with 3 hits.
Tyler Snep, Ben Cornelius and Dylan Niedzwiecki each added 2 hits for the Bears.
Wauconda 7, Lakes 3:
Brian McFarlin went 3-for-5 at the plate and had a home run and a double to lead Wauconda to the win. Alex Machon also had 3 hits.
Winning pitcher Trevor Sefcik had 2 strikeouts in four innings.
The Bulldogs are now 7-3 on the season.
Meanwhile, Lakes managed to out-hit Wauconda, 10-7. The Eagles, who drop to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the NSC Prairie, got 2 hits out of Stephen Mogged, Jack Christensen and Ryan Selig.
Grayslake North 21, Round Lake 3: Devin Gaines went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double to lead Grayslake North.
Bobby Krebs also had a double for the Knights.
Winning pitcher Eric Obenauf pitched an inning in relief and struck out 1 batter.
For Round Lake, Lucas Hollingsworth had a double.
Stevenson 2, Lake Forest 1: Charlie Ling had 2 hits to lead Stevenson, which scored both of its runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Robert McGaha added a double for the Patriots. Winning pitcher Bronson Litcher closed the game with a strikeout in the seventh inning.
