Nashville hatchet attack suspect not mentally competent

NASHVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A man accused of a hatchet attack against a high school exchange student from China has been found not mentally competent to stand trial for attempted murder.

Brownˆ Circuit Judge Judith Stewart made the ruling Monday during a competency hearing for 59-year-old Dana Ericson.

The Herald-Times reports (http://bit.ly/1qNFAfR ) Ericson will be transferred from the Brown County Jail to Logansport State Hospital.

After several months, doctors will re-evaluate Ericson to see if his mental status has improved. If it has, his criminal case will proceed. If he does not improve, Ericson will continue to receive care at Logansport.

Ericson is accused of attacking 18-year-old Yue Zhang in downtown Nashville while she was taking photos for a class project at Brown County High School. Ericson told police he was committing "ethnic cleansing."
