5 people arrested in Marseille during French league game

MARSEILLE, France (AP) - Police have arrested five people after clashes involving Marseille soccer supporters following another lackluster performance from the struggling French club.

Three fans were arrested inside the Velodrome after they threw flares during a 0-0 draw with Bordeaux on Sunday night in the French league. The two other arrested threw projectiles at police forces outside.

According to police officials in Marseille, five policemen were slightly injured in a scuffle outside the stadium that involved around 1,000 people.

Marseille, the only French club to win the Champions League, has been enduring a miserable league campaign and is winless in nine games. With five games remaining, the southern team has yet to secure its place in the topflight for next season.

Fans also showed their discontent by displaying hostile banners to club officials and players while police had to intervene to prevent a pitch invasion as the match drew to a close.
