Girls water polo: Barrington picking up momentum
Barrington was the class of the girls water polo tournament it hosted on Saturday, winning decisively in all three of its games to claim the title in a six-team field.
The Mid-Suburban West co-leaders handled Lake Forest and Vernon Hills by 14-1 scores before beating Riverside-Brookfield 11-3 in the championship matchup.
In the title game, Barrington had jumped ahead 6-0 after the first quarter. Isabella Rojas finished with a game-high 4 goals and Mia Latimer, Nicole Runtz and Andrea Potgieter had 2 goals apiece while goalie Ellie Connors made 9 stops.
Against Vernon Hills, Runtz and Potgieter both scored 3 goals and Potgieter and Courtney Blum had 2 apiece.
Against Lake Forest, Latimer and Rojas had 3 scores apiece as Connors (3 saves) and Morgan Kelly (4) shared time in goal.
Barrington (10-1) and Fremd (11-3) meet in a matchup to decide the MSL West lead at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Barrington.
Fremd topped Maine South, Metea Valley and Niles West handily on Saturday to win its own six-team tournament.
at Maine East: Prospect and Palatine both finished with 2-1 records in tournament play, with the Knights finishing third and the Pirates taking fifth place.
In the head-to-head matchup between the schools, Prospect held Palatine scoreless in the second half to earn a 4-3 victory.
The Knights (7-6) went on to top Maine East 9-5 in the third-place game as Colleen Doyle and Mina Singateh led the scoring and Lauren Broz stopped 12 shots.
Palatine (7-8) defeated Buffalo Grove 6-1 in the fifth-place game with Kristin Anderson (3 goals) and Mathilde Mogensen (2) leading the scoring effort and Meghan Woell making 7 saves.
Bradley topped St. Charles East in the championship game.
at Glenbrook South: Conant won its second game of the day 8-6 against Lincoln-Way West but wrapped up a 1-2 effort with a 12-7 loss to Hinsdale Central.
Hersey Invite: Hersey finished 3-0 in its own six-team tournament to grab top honors.
Hoffman Estates went 2-1, with its only loss an 8-4 decision against Hersey.
