Quinn had a budget director? Who knew?
I admit to some skepticism when I read my letter from the Daily Herald regarding efforts that would be made to enhance the paper's relevance and features. I wondered, would anything really change? Suddenly, on Monday's opinion page, I got my answer.
I'm used to reading the comics in the Neighbor section, but here, amid the pieces of doom and gloom and whining partisanship was a half-page work of comedic genius, framed in color worthy of the Sunday funnies. A fellow named Vaught, who says he spent four years as Pat Quinn's "budget director", now claims to have a solution to "Rauner's" budget crisis.
Given the hospice state of finances inherited by Gov. Rauner, who could have imagined that (A) Gov. Quinn's free-spending administration even had a position called "budget director", or (B) anyone, short of waterboarding, would confess to having held, and taken a salary for, that position.
Perhaps Saturday Night Live, which is in dire need of new material, could base a skit on this scenario starring Jon Lovitz in the role of Illinois Budget Director: "Yeah, that's it!"
Thanks for the laughs. Roger M. Pretzel
