Algonquin, state police to conduct roadside safety check
Algonquin and state police will conduct a joint roadside safety check in McHenry County this weekend, officials said.
Starting Friday, officers will watch for impaired driving on Route 62 in Algonquin, said State Trooper Aldo Schumann, safety education officer for Illinois State Police District 2 in Elgin.
According to a news release from state police, authorities will be on the lookout for drivers operating a vehicle in an unsafe manner, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license or driving with open alcoholic beverages.
Funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the project aims to remove DUI offenders from the roads, officials said, as drugs and alcohol are "significant factors" in about 40 percent of fatal crashes statewide.
