Ash Wednesday was an iconic day in Arlington Heights

Where are the bells and whistles? The alleluias? The fireworks? The balloons ascending?

Ash Wednesday was an iconic day in Arlington Heights.

Together, a Lutheran minister from Faith Lutheran Church and a Catholic priest from St. James Church gave out ashes at Luther Village.

In early days in Arlington Heights there was bad feeling between Lutherans and Catholics. As Myrtle Lauterburg once told me, "The Lutheran minister forbade boys to go with Catholic girls." Gertrude Pfingston complained that in parades the children from public schools were always in front, Lutheran children in back because they were "dutchies."

This Ash Wednesday Lutherans and Catholics stood in line together to receive ashes together.

Let the trumpets sound.
